Name:

Protea

Description:

The diverse members of the Protea family (Proteaceae) are native to the South Africa or to Western Australia.  The University of Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station first brought about 50 species of Protea to the Kula area of Maui in the 1960's.    Each bloom is not a single flower but a cluster of filamentous, modified flowers surrounded by brightly-colored, petal-like leaves called bracts.  These blooms are usually found in many shades of red, oranges, pinks, yellows and celery.   The spectacular King Protea is South Africa's official national flower measures 6-12 inches across and one of the most popular flowers in Maui's cut flower industry.  Protea is widely used by the hotels for decorating their lobbies.
