Name:
|
Plumeria - Melia
|
Description:
It is not uncommon to catch the intoxicating
fragrant scent of Plumeria blossoms as you sit on one of Hawaii's
beautiful beaches. Plumeria is a small tree in the dogbane family
(Apocynaceae) with highly fragrant flowers native to tropical America,
but planted throughout the world's tropical and subtropical regions.
First brought to Hawaii in the 1860's, there are now seven species
(plus many hybrids) in red-, pink-, white-, and yellow-flowered
varieties. One common Plumeria is named Frangipani after an Italian
Renaissance nobleman who made a perfume with a fragrance similar to
that of its flowers. The richly sentimental Plumeria is highly valued
for lei making in Hawaii and can often be found in the yards of
Hawaii's residences.
