Name:
|
Anthurium
|
Description:
Extremely loved because of their brilliant colors
and durability after they are cut. There are 550 species native to
Central and South America and Caribbean. The spectacular red 'capotillo
colorado' (little red cape) from Columbia was the first species brought
to Hawaii in 1889 and is still very popular. Large scale
Anthurium cultivation began in Hawaii in the 1940's. Since 1950 the
number of species in cultivation has increased to several dozen and the
ease of producing hybrids has resulted in many new shapes and colors.
The colors range from brilliant reds and red-oranges to delicate pinks
and soft celery greens and pure whites. Anthiriums have now become
Hawaii's most important cut flower crop.
