Description:
Haleakala silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense), found only within the crater
and on the outer slopes of Haleakala National Park in Maui, Hawaii is a
sunflower relative. Silvery hairs protect the leaves of this plant from high
levels of ultraviolet radiation in the intense sun of its high-elevation (above
7000 feet) habitat. The rosette-like plant grows vegetatively for 25 to 50
years or more then sends up a 2 to 4 foot flowering stalk, flowers once, sets
seed and dies. Believed near extinction in the 1920's due to goat browsing and
removal of silverswords as souvenirs by early visitors, this species has thrived
under the protection within Haleakala National Park and now numbers about 50,000
plants.
