The flowers are striking with their colorful petals and long staminate tube. Hawaii has many Hibiscus species, both native and introduced. Because of their of their large colorful flowers they have been widely planted as ornamentals and colors include red, pink, white, and yellow. The rare, yellow ma’o hau hele (Hibiscus brackenridge) is Hawaii’s official state flower. According to Hawaiian tradition, a woman wearing a hibiscus flower in her left ear is spoken for. But if she wears the flower is in her right ear, she is not married or betrothed.
